'Friends of President' - Steamer crew dress

'President' and 'Kildare' belong to the Black Country Living Museum, and 'Friends of President' take the boats out onto the canals to help publicise the museum.

Inside the museum, staff and volunteers dress as closely as possible to the period they represent - so 'President's' crew do likewise. They do this by wearing clothing that aims to create an historical scene of the early 20th century.

Opinions as to what this should be can vary, but we have done extensive research into FMC steamer crews which has resulted in the following general guidelines:

Crew Dress:

  • Brown or white corduroy trousers;
  • Oxford or union shirt (collarless);
  • Red or blue neckerchief;
  • Flat cap and waistcoat;
  • Black boots with safety toecaps;
  • Blue bib and brace overalls are worn by engine room crew only;
  • Overcoat or donkey jacket;
  • Ladies wear either men's dress or a long skirt, high neck blouse and shawl.

Notes on possible suppliers: The best coats are Donkey jackets with the waterproof liners on the inside.
